Port Noarlunga, about 30 kilometres south of Adelaides CBD, is where Sue and I spend many summer days, enjoying the calm waters and sunshine. We also visit on occasional winters day, enjoying a storm or the winter seas crashing on the reef. The long sandy beach of about 2 kilometres is protected by a reef for over a kilometre, and has 2 surf clubs patrolling in the summer months. The southern end of the beach is a safe surfing and boby boarding location, and also leads to the mouth of the Onkaparinga River, where you can try your hand at fishing. The reef is a great, safe spot for beginners to snorkel or scuba dive and see a variety of fish. You can either swim out to the reef, or you can walk along the jetty, and just climb down the stairs - it is then only a few metres to swim to the reef, which stands about a metre out of the water at low tide. The more adventurous can dive on the outside of the reef, still in almost complete safety. There is an underwater trail for divers around the reef, which by the way is an aquatic reserve.
